Millwood Spar – “The Shell garage in Cam” is the evolution of a business that first opened on 25 April 1966. Built on a green field site, and surrounded by nothing except more fields, it had been constructed by a local family, who continued to operate the site until the end of 1999. During those years substantial extensions and alterations had added car showrooms and a workshop.
The new Millennium brought both new ownership and major changes in fuel retailing, which resulted in the decimation in the number of trading petrol forecourts. Those that remained enjoyed a substantial uplift in trade that demanded commensurate facilities. As a result, the site closed in November 2008 and £1.25m knock down and rebuild commenced.
In February 2009 the brand new facility was opened by David Drew, our local MP, with a 2000 sq ft Spar branded convenience Store and 32 nozzle extended and redesigned petrol forecourt. A positive statement in a world immersed in recession. Throughout more than 50 years of trading, some things have remained unchanged. The company is still family owned and Shell have remained our fuel trading partner. You don’t represent the best without being the best.
